Survey of Arts Portfolio Wales members

Our Arts Portfolio Wales Survey is a bi-annual survey of the 67 Arts Portfolio Wales organisations. These organisations include music, drama and dance companies, arts centres and theatres, galleries and community arts organisations.

Arts Portfolio Wales Survey 2017/18

The Survey is one of the publications categorised under our Official Statistics requirements, and our latest one outlines the full findings for the financial year 2017/18.

The questions asked in the survey cover attendance at arts events, participation in arts activities, broadcasts, streaming, employment and training in the arts, as well as the ‘Protected Characteristics groups’ as defined in the Equality Act 2010.

Following the Equality Act 2010, we have a legal responsibility to ensure that anyone working as an employee for - or using a service provided by - an arts organisation in receipt of our funding is treated fairly. The protected characteristics include: disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, and age (over 50s and children and young people). These protected groups are examined for both those attending the arts, and those working within the arts sector. We also collect data on both Welsh speakers and families.

The 2017/18 findings show that Arts Portfolio Wales organisations delivered a total of 22,381 arts events, generating attendances of 3.8 million in 2017/18.

There were 58,955 participatory arts sessions run during the year, resulting in 839,373 attendances.
