Theatr Gerdd Cymru

Music Theatre Wales began life in Cardiff in 1988 and the first MTW production was typically inventive, setting Peter Maxwell Davies’s The Martyrdom of St Magnus in the graveyard of the Saxon church in the grounds of St Donats Castle. The company continues to break new ground in opera, presenting newly commissioned works, bringing new artists to the form and finding a new place for pieces already written which are either neglected or unseen in the UK. Today, Music Theatre Wales is acknowledged as one of the UK’s leading contemporary opera companies, dedicated to performing masterpieces of the recent past and to commissioning new works from the very best composers and writers -operas which we hope will enter the future repertoire of opera companies around the world. Since 1988 we have created almost 30 productions and presented 14 world premieres. We have an established programme to help nurture new opera composers and we have created productions with a wide range of partners including Opera National du Rhin in Strasbourg, the Berlin Festival, Opera Vest in Norway, Banff Centre in Canada, Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon, Haarlem Theatre in The Netherlands, Treffpunkt in Stuttgart, Scottish Opera and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 2002, Music Theatre Wales became the first Associate Company of the Royal Opera House. This partnership has given us a fabulous London home and opportunities to undertake projects we could not otherwise afford, through co-productions and co-commissions. In turn, we have brought contemporary opera of quality and artistic rigour into the very heart of the home of grand opera. At the 2011 TMA Theatre Awards our production of Greek by Mark-Anthony Turnage won Outstanding Achievement in Opera against stiff competition from Opera North and Glyndebourne. The company has twice been short-listed for the Prudential Awards for “creativity, excellence, innovation and accessibility.” Lynne Plowman’s opera Gwyneth and the Green Knight which we commissioned won the British Composers Award and her second opera The House of the Gods, again commissioned by us, was also shortlisted for this award in 2007. The company has been recorded on CD, broadcast on BBC radio and our work has been screened on BBC2. In 2009 the company worked for the first time in Welsh, commissioning a new performing version of The Soldier’s Tale –Stori’r Milwr. Plans for 2012 include an autumn tour of two new operas by Huw Watkins and Stuart MacRae which will receive their world premieres at the Edinburgh International Festival. In 2013, the company will give the UK premiere of Luci mie traditrici by Salvatore Sciarrino, while Philip Glass and Christopher Hampton are writing a new opera for us, based on Kafka’s The Trial, to be premiered at Covent Garden in 2014 in a co-commission and co-production with the Royal Opera House.

Deborah Ann Withey

I am a Welsh-American artist whose early career was in visual communications: in journalism, print, digital design, and illustration, working as an illustrator, designer, art director and finally as design director for a group of 36 publications. I continue to freelance internationally as a designer and illustrator. In 2009, I decided (not due to redundancy) that I wanted to move away from work in publishing to find new successes in teaching, making and most honestly, to live a more varied creative life, for this I emigrated to Wales. In Pembrokeshire, I teach creative awareness and OCN art courses for adult learners, NEET, children of all ages and lead workshops county-wide. From my own studio, cheese and pickles, I lead intensive workshops which help to prepare individuals in their own careers in design an illustration. For my own creative expression, I work as a painter, printmaker and collage relief artist, drawing inspiration from my surroundings, medieval and Celtic art, Welsh language, history, and beliefs. I have been a lead artist for Cauldrons and Furnaces 2012, held an artist-in-residency, and show in public and private galleries. My work is held in private collections around the world.

Made in Roath

madeinroath is for anyone and everyone who’s interested in art, culture, community or just having fun, and we have people from all across the UK (and beyond) who travel to Roath to take part. Our annual festival takes place in October, when we host a week-long extravaganza of events and activities across all creative disciplines, showing the very best of local talent alongside some excellent national and international artists. We believe art and culture can enrich the lives of everyone, and so that’s why a lot of what we do takes art out of the traditional museum or gallery spaces and into the community.

Rhwydwaith Celfyddydau Ieuenctid Cymru

YANC is an organisation that brings together professionals delivering across the youth sector in Wales to share best practice and resources. YANC is an embryonic network which started life in response to the youth arts sector lacking any sort of cohesive thinking and sharing of practice across Wales. Initially the network was formed on the basis of various companies who were initially involved in a project. However this quickly grew as there was a genuine appetite amongst practitioners and organisations alike to develop practice and networks pan Wales. YANC has now become a genuinely pan Wales network which involves both Welsh and English speaking companies and individuals. It regularly hosts skills and practice sharing workshops across Wales as well as its biennial CASGLIAD conference.

Asking4It Productions

Asking4It Productions make innovative theatre and opera. We were founded in Wales in 2011, write our own material and commission musical scores. We are currently working towards the production of "Natasha - A triptych - studies in experimental opera". Shelter (Natasha) is an exceptional piece of work, complete in itself and also promising a much greater exploration of important, uncomfortable material with social and political value and purpose. Ian Grant, actor and producer, London "Butcher" offers the opportunity for a social critique that portrays what it describes: the multi-national political and economic forces that embed themselves in women’s bodies through the hands of Medicine, and the varying ways women themselves recognise (or not) these forces.
