About the Artist

Gideon Koppel - Portrait-2 © Dave SwindellsGideon Koppel was a post-graduate research student at the Slade School of Fine Art. His work has been exhibited in galleries from The Tate Modern London, to MoMA New York; screened at film festivals and distributed theatrically around the world.

He has made commissioned work for television broadcasters such as BBC, Channel Four and ARTE; award winning film commercials and private commissions like the film installation made for Japanese fashion label Comme des Garçons, designed by Dante Ferretti and exhibited at the Florence Biennale.

His feature-length film Sleep Furiously - with a soundtrack by Aphex Twin - was one of the most critically acclaimed British films of the year, nominated for the Golden Leopard at The Locarno International Film Festival and winning the 2010 Guardian First Feature Film Award.

In 2013, the Diffusion International Photography festival staged a one-screen version of his film installation B O R T H which features a soundtrack by James Dean Bradfield.

Gideon is Professor of Film at Aberystwyth University and an Associate Fellow of Green Templeton College, University of Oxford.

Gideon will use still photography to explore the flat, open landscapes and horizons of the Netherlands, where a high proportion of the land is reclaimed and visually marked by man-made earthworks and structures.

Gideon Koppel - B O R T HThe frame of the camera will transform the environment into a stage on which the ecologies and dramatic struggles between nature and human intervention can be played out. In this process the landscape becomes something sensory: an embodiment of histories and traces of life which become absorbed into what he calls an 'internal landscape'.

By using still photography rather than a time-based medium, Gideon is returning to a more tactile form of picture making and one which involves the contemplative process of a studio practice. It offers more possibilities of being able to play with images - to explore their elementary qualities such as form, shape, surface and scale.

This project will also involve an exploratory process of still photography using a combination of chemical and digital techniques: integrating the painterly qualities and sensitivities of film with the subtle image manipulations afforded by digital techniques.
