Ian Rowlands

Theatre and Drama

Ian RowlandsIan Rowlands was born in the Rhondda Valley.

As a theatre director, he has been at the helm of four Welsh theatre companies – Theatr y Byd, Theatr Bara Caws, Cwmni Theatr Gwynedd and Llwyfan Gogledd Cymru.

As a writer, recent theatre credits include Blink (which toured Wales, ran Off-Broadway and was adapted for Radio Cymru) and Desire Lines (Sherman Cymru).

Recent radio credits include Gwennie (Radio 4) and several Radio Cymru drama commissions, most recently, the 3 part Ar fin y gyllell (a drama set in Zimbabwe and Wales) and a Pethe special (S4C), which documented the making of that series.

A re-focus

Ian Rowlands - BlinkIan Rowlands has never termed himself ‘a writer’. Rather he says "I am theatre practitioner, of which writing is only one facet".

However, over the past decade and more, he has neglected this holistic approach, having abdicated responsibility for full production of his plays to others. He now feels that it is time for him to realize his own work again.

It has been five years since Ian was active (as a director) in the Welsh theatre and twelve years since he last staged a work of his own (Pacific in 2001). With this Award, he hopes to engage, once again (as a theatre practitioner) with the bilingual stage of Wales and stages beyond.

His aim is to achieve this firstly through travel - to deepen the influence of European theatre upon his practice. For example, he is currently working in collaboration with the Dutch writer and director Jeroen van den Berg to create Fragments of Journeys towards the Horizon – a work based upon the influence of place upon the person (psycho-geography).

Through the further development of this project and the initiation of others, Ian’s long-term aim is to once again, be a vital ‘practitioner’ in the Welsh theatre scene.
