Creating public value web pages

We would like all our funded organisations to display information about public investment in the arts on their websites. This will help to engage your visitors and supporters and increase public understanding of how and why investing in the arts is good value for money.

How you choose to do this will depend on what kind of organisation you are, and what kind of website you have. This page includes some general guidance on tone and content, as well as a couple of examples to help inspire you.

General advice

  • Focus any content around the '10 Reasons why the Arts in Wales Matter'. You could include the phrase: 'Public funding for the arts in Wales costs each person just 32p per week'.
  • Include the Arts Council of Wales logo on the page, which links to our website
  • In addition to documenting artistic achievements it will particularly helpful if you can demonstrate how the work that you do contributes towards building communities, driving economic growth, showcasing the best of what we have to offer, boosting tourism, supporting education and creating employment.
  • Be concrete. Give examples of key artistic successes, audience figures and touring information for your productions, examples of educational or outreach projects and how many people have used them. Explain how you are funded and why public funding is important to you, and outline any contribution your organisation makes to the local economy. Remember, don't just limit to sharing this on your website, you can share this via other platforms such as your annual report.
  • Include quotes from visitors, teachers and local business leaders. This will help to bring your argument to life and remind people that the money invested in your organisation is ultimately for their benefit.
  • Be positive. Rather than dwelling on what would be lost if your funding was removed, celebrate what you are able to achieve by using it.

Using Wales Millennium Centre as an example this is the kind of copy you could think about creating for your organisation:

Wales Millennium Centre, or 'armadillo' as locals have affectionately named it, is earning a reputation as one of the world’s iconic arts and cultural destinations.

The Centre is also home to eight creative organisations, namely Welsh National Opera, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, National Dance Company Wales, Literature Wales, Hijinx Theatre, The Touch Trust, Tŷ Cerdd and Urdd Gobaith Cymru.

You might recognise its Cardiff Bay exterior from popular BBC TV shows Torchwood and Doctor Who. Inside, the stage has welcomed West End musicals, opera, ballet and contemporary dance and stand-up comedians. Visitors should check out the guided tour, restaurants and bars as well as the free foyer performances that take place most days.

Wales Millennium Centre opened on November 26, 2004.

Since opening the Centre has:

  • welcomed some 8 million visitors
  • sold two million tickets to theatre performances
  • achieved an overall average audience of 75%
  • staged 2,025 ticketed performances
  • staged over 3,000 free performances
  • generated £4 for every £1 of public subsidy
  • attracted new attendees to arts events, with 45,000 first time bookers in 2009
  • increased the audience from West Wales by 52% from 42,000 (2005) to 64,000 (2009)
  • increased the audience from outside Wales by 64% from 31,000 (2005) to 51,000 (2009) with obvious benefits for tourism in Wales
  • engaged residents from some of the most disadvantaged parts of Wales: 10% of ticket buyers from Communities First areas (2009)
  • attracted 82,000 children to participate in cultural activities

The Centre is more than just a theatre. It is:

  • a cultural powerhouse which is accessible to all
  • Wales’ No 1 visitor attraction, attracting more than one million visitors every year, and 12th in the UK’s league table of cultural attractions
  • a significant economic driver, supporting 1,000 employees directly on site, making it one of the largest employers in Cardiff Bay
  • Public funding for arts in Wales costs each person in Wales just 32p per week.
