The Machynlleth Tabernacle Trust was established in 1986 in order to transform the Wesleyan Tabernacle into a concert space (350 seats) for local and visiting musicians. It is also used for lectures and other events. It has become known as one of the finest chamber music concert hall in the British Isles and artists from far afield come to perform, and many ask to record there.

The restoration of the Tabernacle was followed by the development of the adjoining property, and the building of a link building between that and the auditorium, that allowed four galleries for Art exhibitions under the collective name of Museum of Modern Art, Wales (MOMA Wales) to open in 1992. These galleries are open six days a week, including bank holidays, and entry is free. Approximately twenty exhibitions are held during the year, by established and emerging artists, many have an emphasis on links with Wales. The annual Open Art Competition attracts entries from throughout the UK. The Tabernacle Art Collection, comprising over 250 works of art, is kept in the building and exhibited as part of the exhibition programme.

The building also has space for education and learning, mainly language classes but also used for music and art teaching. Local and national groups use the space available for holding meetings.

The Trust organises the annual Machynlleth Festival in August, a week's programme of over 15 events featuring local, national and international musicians playing Welsh, Jazz and Classical music. The programme includes the Hallstatt Lecture on a subject of Celtic Heritage, the award of the Gold Medal for service in the world of Music, Art or Literature in Wales, and master classes for young musicians. Recordings of the Festival are regularly featured on Radio 3 and Radio Cymru.

In 2013 the first professional Curator was appointed. In May 2015 "The Tannery" was opened after many years of fundraising and restoration of this historic industrial building. This contains two galleries, connected to the main building by a bridge, one of which is specifically for sculpture. This brings the number of exhibition spaces up to seven.

In December 2015 The Machynlleth Tabernacle Trust was awarded accreditation, by the Museums, Archives and Libraries Division of the Welsh Government, for its Museum of Modern Art. As a result of its new status the museum will be known as MOMA Machynlleth.
